Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Physical Therapy for Traumatic Brain Injury

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is usually a result of a direct blow to the head and ranges from mild to severe. There is damage to the brain and surrounding tissue resulting in wide-ranging physical and psychological effects. Some signs or symptoms may appear immediately after the traumatic event, while others may appear days or weeks later.

Many symptoms can occur after a TBI, with balance and walking issues being the most prominent. Other symptoms include weakness, confusion, fatigue, and impaired coordination. Whether mild or severe, specialized neurological physical therapy is key to regaining ability and reaching your goals.

What sets Balance Back to Life Physical Therapy apart from other PT clinics is that we see most clients for full 60-minute sessions, allowing more complex and individualized treatments to be implemented. As Traumatic Brain Injury can have long-lasting effects, we generally recommend PT twice a week for 4-6 months, however, every person is different so we adjust to fit your needs and goals. We also will provide you with a detailed home exercise program to give you the confidence and independence to complete exercises safely by yourself. Our home-based treatments include an evaluation of the living environment to guide you and your caregivers with recommended adaptations for residential living space, helpful assistive equipment, and much more.
